The Upper Delaware River
The 73.4-mile stretch of the Delaware
River between Hancock, NY and Mill Rift, PA is part
of the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River,
a component of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers
System. Named to the system in 1978, the Upper Delaware
Scenic and Recreational River is a working partnership
of local, state, and federal governments, as well
as individuals, organizations and businesses, dedicated
to conserving this precious resource while providing
public use and preserving private property rights.
This cooperative legislation was the first of its
kind in the country.
The Upper Delaware is managed by the
National Park Service, with input from the Upper Delaware
Council, which was established in 1988.
The river boosts a healthy recreational
economy and is known as the best fresh water fishery,
this side of the Mississippi.
